Building with Nature

In line with her core values, Julia Goodwin is now a Building with Nature Approved Assessor. Being accredited in the Building with Nature Standards Framework means that delivering high quality green infrastructure through a landscape-led approach to planning and design is integrated into every project from the outset, making nature, landscape character and context assets that enable good placemaking.

What is Building with Nature?

Building with Nature puts nature at the heart of new development in a way that’s good for people and for wildlife. The Building with Nature Standards provide planners and developers with evidence-based, how-to guidance on delivering high-quality green infrastructure.

The Building with Nature Standards is a framework of holistic design principles and the UK's first green infrastructure benchmark. Building with Nature Practitioners have a proactive approach to designing and delivering climate-positive development that balances the needs of people and wildlife, now and long into the future. By applying the Building with Nature Standards, via policy and directly to development plans, we can more effectively and consistently work with industry to bring forward development that responds to location and context and commits to management and maintenance.

This evidence-based approach helps to reduce planning uncertainty by establishing a shared framework of principles of what constitutes high-quality green infrastructure that responds to local context and character. The Building with Nature Approach is also a story-telling vehicle, creating narratives that engage local communities and local authorities and demonstrate the benefits of a living with nature design approach, linked to best practice guidance and case studies.

The Standards have been developed in partnership with both industry and local authorities. They have been tested and refined in multiple locations from Cornwall to Inverness, and early adopters range from inner city regeneration projects to new settlements, both residential and commercial development. We know that Building with Nature can deliver multiple benefits to both people and the natural world in a range of contexts.

To enable developers to demonstrate that they have met the Building with Nature Standards, we offer formal Accreditation for both policy and development. The first step to achieve a Building with Nature Award is to work with an Approved Assessor. Building with Nature Assessors work collaboratively with the project team to deliver high-quality green infrastructure that is good for people and wildlife.

What benefits can JGLA bring to a project as a Building with Nature Assessor?

Julia brings her years of experience as a Landscape Architect, working on strategic greenfield sites and small brownfield sites, to the Building with Nature Approach.

When using JGLA as landscape architects on a project, the Building with Nature standards will underpin the approach to site appraisals and design development.  This will help to reduce planning uncertainty, as the standards provide an evidence-based set of standards that are increasingly recognised and adopted by Local Authorities.

JGLA will also be able to provide up-to-date advice and practical and innovative case-studies, helping to unlock each site's unique potential.

Where JGLA are appointed as Building with Nature Assessors, Julia's experience working closely with design teams and clients is invaluable to enable the project team to understand the Building with Nature process. As an Assessor, JGLA will provide technical and design support to help the design team produce a scheme that will optimise the benefits that can be achieved through delivering a multi-functional network of Green Infrastructure features.

As a Building with Nature Assessor, JGLA are constantly developing their understanding of how new local policy requirements can be positively addressed, in particular policies regarding Net Biodiversity Gain, the public health crisis and climate emergency.

What are Building with Nature Awards?

Building with Nature (BwN) is a voluntary approach that enables developers to go beyond the statutory requirements to deliver more for people and wildlife.

A BwN Award can provide your scheme with formal recognition of meeting the BwN Standards, which can reassure a wide set of stakeholders that you are committed to the design and delivery of high-quality green infrastructure.

The BwN Awards for physical development are:

How do I get a Building with Nature Award for my Scheme?

The first step is to appoint an Approved Assessor, such as JGLA. We will be able to advise you on the eligibility of your project for an Award and offer an Initial Review Produce to determine the best way forward.

Should the scheme be suitable for an Award, the Audit Fee levels include for an Assessment and an Audit, based on the planning stage and size of the scheme.

The Accreditation system results in Awards, but is effectively a "process tool" that can help guide the design process. It is an innovative and collaborative process that considers every stage of delivery. The benefits of working towards a BwN Award are particularly apparent when the BwN Assessor is appointed early on, ensuring that relevant consultants are engaged at the right time, helping to streamline the design process, saving time and avoiding mistakes, and helping the developer to meet all the necessary planning policies and other targets.
